Literary League: We're BAAA-AAACCKKKK!

HOLY MOLEY!
School starts (of has started) and as teachers and principals, we are all left wondering what just happened. Where did my summer go and will it ever come back? Sadly the answer is that it evaporated while we were at the beach, camping, traveling, sleeping in, taking care of family members, dealing with life issues, or working out. OR, just simply being at home with the family. Regardless, it is OVER, GONE, GOODBYE, SEE YA LATER ALLIGATOR!

Now, the real question is ARE YOU PREPARED for the students? I hope so. I have spent the summer as a new principal working, stressing, and prepping for the amazing school year to come! I have also spent time working with and getting to better know the people below in this list! Let me tell you- THEY ARE EXPERTS AT WHAT THEY DO!

With the sale going on, it would be worth your time to check out EACH professional educator's shop below and see what they have to make your back to school easy and stress free! WAHOO!

For example, my Language Arts Daily Dose and my Daily Morning Math Sets are perfect for ensuring spiral review and consistent practice of required concepts!

I wish you all a most wonderful back to school experience! ROCK ON!

Created by MrHughes Goes Back to School

Greetings Blog Hoppers!
John Hughes here from Created by MrHughes. I am so pleased to have you stop by as part of the LITERARY LEAGUE BLOG HOP and learn a little bit more about me!

Let start by giving you a little background about me and my teaching career to this point! I started teaching in 2001. My first job was the computer specialist for 1200 elementary students. I had a new class every 30 minutes and never the same class twice in a week. It was an adventure!
From there I moved to 5th grade for three years, and then spent 9 years in sixth, after switching schools and districts. I love teaching science and math, but I have a REAL love for writing and reading! Best subjects EVER!
This past year, I was 1/2 day 6th grade teacher and 1/2 day administrator for our school. It was a crazy adventure and I loved it.
This year will start a whole new adventure- I will be the full-time administrator of my school. WAHOO! I am so excited to work with ALL the teachers and students in my school AND to be in the classrooms helping my teachers. I CAN'T WAIT TO GET THIS YEAR STARTED!

While you are here, I want to share my favorite read aloud novel with you. I have read many, many books over the years and have loved many them. But, my all-time favorite book is...

I enjoy reading books to my students that have children as the main character. Not only children, but children who they can relate to, they can aspire to be like, that they can learn to appreciate. Esperanza Rising is possibly the best one I have! Not only do they get to see life from the point of view of wealth and poverty, they learn that everyone has the ability to change into something better, even at a high price. Pam Munoz Ryan weaves an incredible tail that has roots in her own family history!

As you head back to the classroom, I invite you to think about what stories you plan to read and the reasons you read them.

Thanks for stopping by my blog and getting to know me a bit better! I wish for you a most amazing back to school event and hope you have a fantastic school year! As teachers we give so much and hope and pray it is enough for our students. I hope you will stop by my shop by clicking HERE and check out all the FREE resources I have to offer to get your year started off right! I have getting to know you activities, writing activities, and more- ALL FREE for the taking!

Enjoy and Happy Back to School!

Back to School Series- Part 1 {DEJUNK IT}

Okay Friends-
Summer is on its way out (and I am nearly sobbing as I type that), and back to school is closer than we want it to be (in fact, many of my friends are already back in the classroom WITH STUDENTS! WOW!)

I am hoping to head over to my classroom later today and really dig in and get things figured out. I moved schools this year, so I have a lot to get ready.

This is my old room packed up!

This is my new room:

It looks much better now (still has a LONG, LONG, LONG ways to go in the next three weeks), but it was scary for a while. I didn't think I would fit as it is smaller than my old room (seems to be a moving theme for our family. Our new house is 500 sq. ft. smaller as well!). But fit I did and I think it turned out really well.

SO, on to the Back to School Tip!

TIP #1)
One thing I learned from moving classrooms is that it is okay to dejunk!
I know, I know! I had the I "might need it some day" thoughts the whole time, but I haven't used it in 9 years, so I think it is okay to Let it Go! (Did you just starting singing in your head, I know I did, dang you Disney's Frozen!)
I threw away a LOT of "stuff" that I can't believe I was hoarding in my filing cabinets and cupboards. Seriously, people, LET IT GO!
Go through your cupboards and closets. See if you can fill at least TWO trash cans with "stuff" you don't need anymore (that, or put it on a table in the hall with a FREE sign on it! It feels so good to get it out. Plus, it makes room/space you might need for new curriculum for the coming year. That said, you can see that I still had plenty to move. 13 years of teaching in boxes is a sight to see.
One of the hardest things I did was to go through all my professional teaching books, magazines, activity guides, etc. and let most of them go as well. I donated a HUGE pile to the school's professional development library. That way, if I needed something again, it was there to copy, but I didn't have to store it. I had so many books, I didn't even remember that I had, it was nice to get them out.

Okay, enough of the dejunk lecture. I just couldn't believe how refreshing it was to do it! (and I have been a hoarder in the past, so I know how hard it can be!).

Okay, no more waiting, get going and let operation DEJUNK begin!
I will be back soon with Tip #2 for Back to School!

Back to School with an Interactive Mobile Project!

 Greetings!
I just had to share this fun project! Back in December I made a New Years Mobile that I shared for free. It became wildly popular and I loved seeing pictures from all over the globe of ways that it was being used in classrooms. It was inspiring and fun.

This got me to thinking- what if I did a Back to School edition! The idea sat in my brain for a while and finally bubbled its way out and onto paper. The results are shown below. I had two of my children take it for a test drive (after all, if there was a kink or issue, I wanted to have it resolved BEFORE I make copies for my 63 writing students- grades 4-6 for this coming school year!).

Both kids were very happy to test drive it for me. My soon-to-be 5th grade daughter was in  heaven. She is very crafty, just like her mom. After she finished coloring and cutting out the shapes, she got to work.

The materials for making this are very simple. Copies of the mobile pieces, string, scissors, and a glue stick (or liquid glue). There are 4 headers to choose from- 3rd, 4th, 5th, or 6th.

My daughter started by laying out all the pieces on the table, making sure the pieces were facing the right direction on both sides.

Once she had them laid out, she cut the string to match the length, leaving extra on both ends (for a loop to hang it with on the top and wiggle room on the bottom!)

Once she had the string cut, she separated the pieces, putting the words face down.

Next, she used the glue stick and outlined the first shape and but a line of glue down the middle where the string was to lay.

Then, she glued the words down and pressed firmly where the string ran through. She had to try a couple of times to get the string straight. :)

My daughter continued to glue each piece in turn, double-checking to make sure the bottom piece was NOT upside down.

When she finished, she cut off the extra string and tied a loop at the top.

Here is my beautiful girl showing off her hard work. I asked her if she liked it and she said it was "really fun!".
A disclaimer: You may be thinking that she said that because she is my daughter- WRONG! There have been MANY times when she has patted my shoulder and told me that an activity/resource wasn't that great! She sure knows how to be honest- which I am grateful for!

Next, my 3rd grade son did HIS project. He was excited to do his first test drive for his dad!

You can see big sister helping, but not too much. I really wanted to see if a 3rd grader to could this with minimal help!

As you can see, he was very successful with his project. AND, he was very proud. We still have it hanging in our living room. ha ha.

If you are wondering what is on the back part- there are LOTS of activities. Students talk about their favorite book/author, what they did on summer vacation, set goals for the year, and more. I am so stinkin' excited to use this with my 63 writing students. My New Year's Mobile looked amazing hanging from my ceiling, and I know these will look stellar too!

Thanks for stopping by! It is always a pleasure to see you.
Cheers-
Mr. Hughes
