Voice Booster Review and Giveaway

So, as an administrator, I am always on the lookout for resources and products that I feel will help my teachers. I search supply catalogs, make notes when I am in their rooms, and will from time to time offer to purchase something for their room that I know will benefit the teacher and students. It is one of the many reasons I LOVE being a principal- I get to help in ways I never could as a classroom teacher (though I still miss teaching in a classroom something terrible!).

So, when I was approached by a representative from Voice Booster to try out their audio system, I was VERY happy as I was looking for sound solutions for several teachers. Not only for my teachers, as our school sound system died and they offer a larger system that is portable- TOTAL SCORE!

I eagerly awaited the arrival of the two systems! I didn't have to wait long! WAHOO!

I was sent the personal size:

AND, this awesome larger size- that I call the CANNON...ha ha!

I have been SUPER impressed with both units. I have a teacher who snatched the personal unit right up and has been using it for nearly a week now. He LOVES that his students can hear him at all times. He said it took a bit of getting used to- as the unit will give feedback and squeal if the headset and the speaker unit get too close. However, he said that he likes that because if the class gets too noisy, he purposely makes it squeal to get their attention...ha ha! Not what I would recommend for it's use, but it works for him.

I love that it stays charged for so long. My teacher can teach confidently all day long and not stress about the battery dying. He is also letting the students wear it as they present to the class. He keeps the unit on his belt (it also comes with a strap that can be worn around the neck- which is awesome they provide that too!), and the student holds the headset and talks to the class. It really is making a difference for his class. They used to be much more rowdy, and he would have to raise his voice. It would sound as if he was frustrated or angry because of the volume at which he would sometimes have to speak. He said that with this system, he doesn't have to strain or raise his voice and the kids can tell the difference. He said it seems less stressful in his room now.

That was interesting insight from the teacher. I have other teachers that are excited to test drive the unit as well- IF, I can pry it out of his hands...ha ha!

As for the "cannon"- I just love that nickname, I have been SUPER impressed with it. Our school was asked to do a small program at a local bank. They said they didn't have any sound equipment we could use. I was a little stressed out and worried that I wouldn't get the sound I needed from this unit- after all- it was a HUGE area with a LOT of students (over 50) singing.

I was totally shocked when I pushed play and had to TURN IT DOWN because the sound was TOO loud! WOW! Best part for me was that all I needed was the stereo cord and may phone to use it. Plugged my phone in from the headphones jack and POOF there was the music I needed.

I havent' tried the SD Card slot or the USB port, but the fact they are on there is AWESOME!
Our school will get some SERIOUS mileage out of this baby for years to come. So, at the end of the day, I just have to say that I LOVE this company and their products. Am I getting paid to say that- NO! By now, I hope you realize that I am not going to say something on my blog I don't believe.

When looking at the cost of these units compared to others, and the features you get- these units are worth EVERY penny you will pay (and compared to others- it's a LOT less!)

Check out there STORE by clicking >>>HERE<<<!

AND- this is the BEST PART! I get to give one PERSONAL UNIT away for FREE! WAHOOOO!

Thanks for stopping by- and I hope you will click on over and check out their product line.
Good luck with the contest and come back again soon!

Product Review: Happi-Nappi Chair Bags for School Desk Chair

Hello My Friends-
It has been a LONG time since my last post. My life has been crazy-busy. I interviewed for and was hired to be the full-time administrator for my school a couple of weeks ago, and so I am finishing out this year as the 1/2 day 6th grade teacher and the full-time admin.

So, in this post, I want to review a product that I received back in October. This is NOT a paid post, and I always do my best to give my honest opinion of a product. If it is not something I would use, or don't feel is helpful, I will make it very clear in my review!

The picture below is of the Happi-Nappi Chair Bag. Cynthia Talley (the owner of Happi-Nappi) and I had several conversations about her product and she agreed to send me a chair cover to try out. My thoughts after getting the chair bag... THEY ARE AWESOME!

I have been using a different brand of chair pockets with my students for several years and I have LOVED them. To me, these chair pockets are a requirement in my classroom. Students use these to keep papers organized and out of their desks as well as their

Then, THIS happened. This amazing and wonderful bag! Ladies and Gentlemen- This bag is da bomb! Let me tell you why:

1) It is extremely well built! That is huge for students, esp. in upper grades where they tend to be hard on everything (you should see my playground equipment).

2) Pockets are deep. My daughter (who is in my class and was MORE than willing to test-drive this for me- which was actually a fight for the students on who wanted to use it!) said that she disliked the deep pockets, but we talked about it and she agreed that the deeper pockets were nice in that everything stayed put. She told me that getting her file folders out was harder and that her folders were getting ripped.  Given the choice, I would still take the deep pockets because papers aren't hanging out and falling out.

 3) There are many more pockets that you would find on a typical chair bag. LOVE THAT!

Here are several more shots of this awesome product:
You can see how deep the big pocket it! A teachers dream of not having to see all the papers!

It does hang lower than other chair bags I have used, but that doesn't bother me, in fact I think it helps to  keep the chair better balanced and keeps it from becoming top heavy and tipping over.

I also like that it is shorter in the front so that it gets less wear and tear from students feet, etc. as they sit in their chairs, on their feet on their chairs, etc.

This is just simply one amazing product. Here is a short video about the company and how they make the bags:

You can learn more about these useful and well-constructed bags (including current pricing and even more suggestions for use) by clicking HERE!

So, do I recommend this product? ABSOLUTELY! I LOVE MINE!
Are there drawbacks? Only the possibility of  the deep pockets being harder to manage for some students- but I do NOT think this is a huge issue and I would buy these for my class in a heart beart. The price is the same as or less than the ones I currently use, and the quality is higher, in my opinion!

Thanks for stopping by- YOU ARE ALL ROCK STARS!

Product Review: Moby Max {and Giveaway}

Howdy Friends!
I have been AWOL for a while now, and it feels great to be back!

And...

What better way to appear than with a PRODUCT REVIEW AND GIVEAWAY! WAHOO!!!!!

Today's' Topic: MobyMax

Overview-

Mobymax is an online platform that give teachers access to varying topics for students to practice and master. It also offers prizes, reporting, one-to-one communication, among other motivational features.

My Experience-
I have been using Moby Max for nearly two years. I just recently moved schools, so my use this year is less than I would like to admit. The reason? I only go to computers once a week, versus everyday like in the past. Set up on Moby Max is super simple and FREE, depending on the amount of access you want to features and data reporting. I used the FREE level for several months before moving to the paid platform. Why did I upgrade? Simple- it was inexpensive and it opened up a large amount of features that made it worth the cost. The content for the students in accessible in BOTH versions, however, so you CAN go the FREE route without sacrificing content!

Is it practical?
This is a question I ask myself every time I faced with the sign-up box. I have to ask myself, "Will I REALLY use this?". I always worry about getting my students loaded in the system, if it will be intuitive for my students, will the enjoy it, what makes it different from all the other platforms out there.

After spending time with my students on the program, I found that it was a platform that delivered exactly what my students needed- and I could access amazing reports- drilling down to each student's level.

Pros-

-Super easy to add students! I can add my entire class of 19 in about 3-5 minutes. I LOVE that the enrollment is hassle free. The screen shot below is ALL the information you enter, and you don't HAVE to put in. Easy-Peasy!
-I love that my students can compete in contests for prizes
-It offers a placement test in each subject so students are placed where they need to work automatically! No more guessing if they are working on skills the really need!
-The ability to easily see what skills the class as a whole AND each student are rocking- OR- which skills need more work!
-Kid friendly, easy to use
-Not overwhelming- just a few problems in each practice set with IMMEDIATE feedback!
-Works on ANY device!
-Web-based- can access from home
-Reports include minutes spent on assignments
-Students earn minutes (you decide how many) by working through lesson that they can use in the game arcade! (I usually give the students time once a week to redeem their minutes and just play. They LOVE IT!)
-Frequent contests for teachers to win great prizes as well

Cons-

-I gotta be honest- it isn't as graphically cutesy and eye-catching as some other platforms out there. My kiddos got over it pretty quick, and I reminded them this isn't a "game", it is interactive practice!

Cost/Pricing-

-FREE! WAHOO! Get started today: www.mobymax.com and create your FREE account!
-If you want ALL the bells and whistles, for just $99 a year for an unlimited amount of students, you can't go wrong!

Okay, okay...

So NOW that you have read my review of MOBYMAX, are you ready to WIN an ENTIRE YEAR of PRO FROM FREE!?!?!?!? WAHOO! Just enter on the Rafflecopter below! :)

Quill Product Review and Giveaway!

Greetings Friends!
I am happy to share with you something that I just got a couple of weeks ago and I use EVERY DAY! Quill.com contacted me to ask if I would like to try out a product and share my experience with my supporters. I was SO EXCITED for this opportunity!

I was sent this little gem:

This cart is AWESOME! Before, I had to bend over or sit down (which I HATE doing while I am teaching. This makes it so I can stand AND teach. My document camera fits perfectly on top, and the black, non-slip mat, make the perfect background when projecting on the board. The top is adjustable. So, you COULD lower it all the way down and have a much lower cart. The doors lock on the front, so I can store computer/printer supplies inside and keep my students out. The wheels also lock in place so the cart doesn't go skiing across the floor! Oh, and it comes with a power bar (heavy duty use) and the mounting hardware to add it to the cart. Oh, and it had a pace to wrap the cord when not in use. This amazing piece of furniture is a MUST have in EVERY classroom!

You can see that the height is perfect for me. You can check out this item HERE! And, before you ask, yes, it is TOTALLY worth the price! This is one sturdy cart!

Now, the best part is, you can WIN this amazing Easel from Quill! It is a $320.00 Value and you can win if for FREE! WAHOOOOO!

Product Review: Mentoring Minds- Critical Thinking for Life: Flip Charts and Strategy Wheels

Greetings Friends!

Today I am going to be doing a product review of a company called Mentoring Minds. They create some pretty amazing products to help teachers better engage their students. I was sent two samples to look over and review. (They are the ONLY compensation for this post. You can request a SCHOOL sample HERE and click on 'Request School Sample' at the bottom on the page.)

As I looked over their website, I was impressed with the research that has gone into each of their resources. These people know what they are talking about. In fact, they have an entire page dedicated to their results. (Click HERE to visit).

The first product I looked at was their Critical Thinking High-Order Thinking Strategies Guide. My first impression of this resource is that it VERY user-friendly. There is a "How to Use" section, which goes over what "Hows" and "Whys". From the Guide, it states that: "The Critical Thinking Strategies Guide is a resource that offers a multitude of questioning stems, strategies, and activities to promote critical and creative thinking". And this flip chart does NOT disappoint. It is 33 pages, packed with charts, question stems, and suggested activities.

I was pretty skeptical of its practicality when I first opened it. I kept thinking, as a teacher, where would I keep this so that I used it. It isn't cheap (they are bout $13.00 each). But, as I have spent time looking through it and being engaged as a teacher in ways I increase my students' thinking, I realized that I would keep it in my computer bag/on my desk- where ever I was doing my lesson planning for the next day.

It has stems for all the subject areas (math, writing, science, reading, social studies). It also have TONS of ideas for Differentiation and Assessment. This is one sample that I won't be donating to the FREE pile in the teacher's lounge. So, this is one that I think you could invest in and not be disappointed! Click HERE to see the ordering page. And, again, I get NOTHING if you order, so this isn't a sales pitch.

The second resource I was sent was the D.O.K. Wheel (Depth of Knowledge for those like me who are not up on their acronyms). I will be honest here. I am not a fan of  Wheel resources from ANY company. They are big and clunky. This ones isn't much better is that regard.

However, I will say that it is packed to the hilt with information. It seems like the Cliff's Notes of the flip books they sell. I honestly wouldn't pay for this resource- not because it isn't well done and extremely useful, but simply because I don't like the format of the wheel.

However, at about 2/3 the cost of the flip book AND the ease of having the information at your fingertips without flipping a gazillion pages, many will enjoy this little gem. I should throw in here that my wheel was double-sided and has the Revised Bloom's Taxonomy as well. I don't know if the purchased versions have both or not as mine is a sample. Okay, just checked on-line and they come double-sided! It is nice to have all 6 levels in an easy to read format. That is a true bonus and a plus for this Wheel! You can learn more about their wheel products HERE.

This company carries many other resources that look amazing, engaging, and designed around the principals of critical thinking. Be sure to check out their entire line of resources HERE or by click on their name below:

If you have any questions about these resources, let me know. Thanks for stopping by. Have a fantastic day! WAHOO!

Product Review: POP CHEF

Back in October, I was selected to review several items and this is the one we waited on until the last- because my kids were SO excited to use it! In fact, my daughter begged every day for about three weeks before I finally agreed that I had time to video it in use for this post.

With great anticipation she opened the package (which you will see in the video) and started looking at all the fun attachments. My wife cut several different food items into slices for her (bread, kiwi, cheese, and apples). My daughter, seeing the commercial and knowing how it works went right to work. As you will see in the video, it didn't go quite as planned. The cheese didn't pop-out, just a corner did. She moved on to other food items, with a similar result. The one that came the closest to actually "popping" out.

Over all, we were very disappointed with the end results. My daughter was disappointed that it didn't work as shown on the TV, but she still had fun cutting all the food into shapes. Towards the end, the popper part actually broke, so we just use the attachments without it.

The parts are pretty flimsy. They do show that a watermelon rind was cut using it, but I am hard pressed to believe that after holding the pieces in my hand.

Would we buy this? Probably not- but again, my daughter (and 5 other kids) LOVED cutting the food into shapes.

Check out this video review of it in action and have a great day!

Ice Cream Magic Maker (A Product Review)

Our kids have seen the commercial for this many, many times on TV, so when I was given the opportunity to review this items, I was a little excited. After all, I thought, if this works well, it could turn out to be a fun reward activity for one of my classes at school (I teach 4-6 grader writing and science).

We planned to let each of our six children have a turn making a flavor of their choice. The directions and device are simple enough to use and understand, AND, it comes with quite a menu of ice cream flavors you can make. Here are the picture of the first time through!

 You just heavy cream, vanilla...

 Sugar...

and chocolate syrup (for chocolate ice cream, of course)

When all the ingredients are in, you put on the leak-proof lid and put the top on. Then you are supposed to shake it for three minutes. (The base is filled with ice and 1/2 cup of table salt!) We set the timer and my ice-cream loving son went to work.

When he was done shaking, the ice cream was no where NEAR ready. So, we happily put the lids back on and set if for a couple more minutes. Even then, it was not close to ice cream, and bordering on a shake consistency. The kids all ate some. My oldest son lost interest at this point and went to watch TV.

Undaunted, we decided to try again. Maybe it was just a weird mixture of ingredients that we chose, so we repeated the steps for a different flavor. Sadly, we never made it to the shake-it stage because the spill-proof lid wouldn't go back on. The cold had warped it. We trashed the ingredients, broke out the "real" ice cream (as our kids were very sad that it didn't work) and enjoyed that instead.

So, bottom line: Would we buy this? Probably not. It was frustrating for our kids to do all the work and not get an ice cream at the end. The thing we were most disappointed about was that it started to leak after the first round. Maybe we just got a defective maker, but it was enough for this family to say, "No Thanks" to trying it again.

I had several videos to upload, but Blogger keeps giving me and upload error and I am sick of trying to get it to work... sigh.

On a ten star rating system, I would give this product a 5. It was okay and fairly inexpensive. However, it just didn't cut it with my kids!

Have a great day-
Mr. Hughes

The Flashlight Friend. A Product Review

Greetings!

I was given the opportunity to have a Flashlight friend in our house for my kiddos to review! Now, the teacher in me TOTALLY thought about how this could also be used in the classroom. Now, for the upper grades, it probably WOULDN'T be used, but I could TOTALLY see lower grades, especially Kindergarten and first grade. What a fun reading buddy these would make.  And, the light turns off after 10 or so minutes, which is nice for battery life. It uses two AAA batteries which are NOT included
The flashlight is VERY bright. I was actually impressed at the volume of light that is produced by this furry little creature. There is also a handle on the back of the Flashlight friend that is supposed to be a handle so that this can be used as a flashlight. I wasn't as impressed with the handle as I felt like it would be ripped off in a short amount of time.

I opened this about two weeks ago and turned it over to my kids. I wanted to get a good first-hand experience with how this would hold up. I have 6 children from ages 2-13. Each one took a turn to use it and give me feedback. You have to tap the lens on the flashlight twice to turn the light on. I was curious to see if my 2 year daughter could operate it. Yup, she sure can. AND, she LOVES this thing.

Rather than type the reviews of a couple of my kids, I made videos. Enjoy listening to my kiddos tell you how THEY feel about this toy.

Well, there you have it.
I think the quality of the item is actually much higher than I expected and I would definitely purchase more of these for my kids if it was something they asked for as a gift, etc.

Thanks for stopping by and have a great day-
Mr. Hughes

PRODUCT REVIEW: Over the Moon

I am pleased to finally share my unpaid review of the Over Moon: The Broadway  Lullaby Project which was conceived and created by Kate Dawson and Jodi Glucksman.

There are three separate pieces that can be purchased. I will only be reviewing two of them- the hardback book and the 2-CD set.

First, the book.
When I received the book in the mail, I was  immediately drawn in. The cover art is simple in appearance, yet full of detail when inspected closely. My next thought was what would be inside a book about lullabies?!?!
Well, let me just tell you that it is AMAZING. Before I did any reading of the lyrics or listening of the music, I spent time looking at each and every drawing. Some were more amazing than others, but ALL of them were very intriguing and caused me to look at them again and again.
Next, I started reading the introductions and foreword. (The foreword really caught my eye because it is written in part by THE Dame Julie Andrews. How cool is that?). I was truly impressed by the creators and the reason this project came into existence. This book is a tribute to creator's late cousin who lost her 5-year battle with breast cancer. I got chills when I read that Ms. Dawson's cousin would give expectant mothers a CD with lullabies, and this was unknown to Ms. Dawson until the completion of this project.
Finally, I was moved to see that a portion of the proceeds will be given to multiple breast cancer charities such as the Breast Cancer Foundation and Young Survival  Coalition. So not only is this an amazing piece of art, it is for a wonderful cause!
With over 88 current lyricists, vocalists, musicians, and artists working together on this project I had high expectations. I will honestly admit that I didn't know a majority of the 88 people involved, but the hype around this book had me expecting a lot.

My Verdict: After listening to every song (some completely through, and the rest for a good portion) I must say that I am truly impressed. As a musical person myself (singing/piano/saxophone/composition) I feel that I have become somewhat of a music snob. This CD did not disappoint. The music was moving and relaxing. Would I listen to this CD on the way to work? No, because I would be snoring in a heartbeat (which, remember is the POINT of a lullaby CD).
Will kids love this? Let me tell you what happened with my 6 children. They were in the room when I started the music and they all stopped and gathered around my laptop to see what I was doing. They had to see the pictures. I had to fight to get my book back.
I would HIGHLY recommend this book to teachers, parents, expecting parents, grandparents, and everyone in between. Cover Priced at $18.95 you won't regret a single second of this purchase. I also think that this would make an awesome gift for expectant mother's. The music is so soothing that mom could enjoy it for several weeks before the wee one arrives to share it with her.

Grade: A+

     What you get:
-1 Hardback Book that is 46 pages long
-1 CD with the music for the 17 songs in the book

Second Product:
The 26 Song two-disc CD collection.

This two CD collection was also sent to me to review. What you would get when you purchase this set includes a 24 page booklet along with the 2 CDs. Since my review copy was a pre-release edition, did not have that, so I can not comment on what it contains. However, I am sure that if it matches the quality of everything else I have seen, it will be excellent.

These CDs contain the original 17 songs from the book, plus 9 additional songs. Again, all of them are wonderful and soothing. In fact, while they were playing, I opened the hardback book and enjoyed the artwork from it again.

I am not sure what else to say about this set. It was well done, the artists performed exquisitely, and I thoroughly enjoyed having the opportunity to review it.

Again, a portion of the proceeds will be given to multiple breast cancer charities such as the Breast Cancer Foundation and Young Survival  Coalition. So, even if you only bought this to support those charities, it would be well worth it.

My Verdict: I would recommend this product to those who want a soothing soundtrack for themselves or their little ones. All my kids (years 11 to 1) commented on how well they liked many of the songs.

Grade: B+

What you get:
-2 Disc Set with 26 total songs (13 per disc)
-1 Twenty-four page booklet (again, I did not receive this part of the set to review)

The third product that is available is an iPad,iPhone, iPod application that basically combines both the CD set and the book. From reading about it, it sounds fantastic, but again, I was not given this part to review.

It was a pleasure to have the chance to review products again. I enjoy the opportunity to share my opinions and feelings based around 12 years of teaching experience (not to mention being a father).

Again, a reminder that this was an unpaid review (and I am NOT getting paid for linking to Amazon).

Product Review: Fraboom.com

Today I will be reviewing a website for you.

Web Address:

Targeted Age Group:
6-12 year-olds (This is the websites recommended ages- I love the material, so I wouldn't limit the age)

Purpose:
A direct quote from the creator: "We’ve spent the last ten years creating a web destination that will compete with any existing entertainment web site. We feature games, interactive books, and classes with real live teachers. It's designed for kids 6 to 12. The catch is that there is an educational twist in every piece of content we provide. FRABOOM is the world’s first online children’s museum featuring classes with real LIVE teachers. Our goal is to nurture creativity while building self-esteem and confidence. If we do our job well we will also provide teachable moments that connect parents with their children."

Why You Should Check It Out:
From the moment you land on the homepage, you begin to see that this site is not some poorly thought out, ad laden monstrosity that some many companies are trying to sell to the education realm. Not only does this site focus on academic content in every activity and game, but it does so in an engaging and carefully thought out process. Now, even if you felt that what you have seen is comparable to other sites (but I think you would be hard pressed to find one), I can almost assure you they do NOT offer LIVE CLASSES with a real LIVE teacher!

Cost:
In the words of the creators, "80% of the content is FREE!". Honestly, in the hour-plus that I spent playing, looking, and scrutinizing, I didn't encounter any area that I was not allowed to enter. If you choose too, you can become a FRABOOM GOLD member for $5.99 a month. Click HERE to see what extra goodies that gives you.
With live teachers and all the content you could dream of, that is truly a steal of deal!

Cons:
Hmmmm....I can't really think of any at this time. As an upper grade teacher, I think that a lot of the content is just under what my 6th graders would consider 'childish', but even at that, once they get in to the games, they seem to not mind. I mean as an adult, I was completely engaged in the content.

Pros:
1) As a web-based application, students can access this site anywhere they have internet. So many programs that we, as teachers, use at school seem to be site based. This means that unless our students are in our classrooms, they can't access the programs they want/need to experience increased learning. Fraboom.com was wise to make this a web-based program. My own kids have already spent several hours (and we just found the site this week) at home playing- and arguing about who gets to play next- and exploring.

2) FREE! (as a teacher, I can NOT emphasize this point enough)

3) High quality content- And not just a few games with false hopes of more, but engaging, in-depth activities ready to go.

4) Future updates that promise to keep kids even MORE excited (like customizing the brain avatar, earning "brain cells" that can be saved and used to "buy" items in the Fraboom virtual store).

Overall recommendation:
I would give this site a 9.5 out of 10. I highly recommend that all educators (and even NON-educators) check it out NOW!

Product Review- MeeWee Music

I would like to take a minute and review a new product that is available to teachers and parents everywhere. This product is called MeeWee. Created by a school teacher from New York who discovered that when he rapped the subject material to his ESL students they listened and learned. From there the idea sprang to life. This music has a lot to be enjoyed. I personally do NOT care for RAP! Therefore I was very apprehensive about what this music might be like. When I first downloaded it (teachers click HERE for a free sample- Parents Click HERE to purchase) and started listening, my 8 year-old son instantly wanted to know what I was listening to. I asked him if he liked it. He had be go through all the songs so he could test them out. I don't think there was really a song he didn't care for. For me, I was glad he liked the upbeat music that had positive lyrics. Some of the lyrics were a little strange to me, but hey, I'm not an 8 year old. The company is working to make the site teacher friendly. I really liked that I could download the lyrics (good for teaching kids the words) and I like that the company has created several lesson plans to accompany many of the songs. The negative side of the lesson plans is that they are NOT downloadable and they are not really in a printer-friendly format (easily fixed, but hey, I want it all!) As a teacher and a parent I do HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT and give it the Official Approval Seal of the Educator's Life Blog Review. Check out their site and see for your self.

Later...

P.S. This is NOT a paid review so don't think I am promoting something for something, other than sharing what is lacking in today's world- Clean music designed just for kids!
