Share the Wealth Teacher-Author Spotlight- Deana Thelen

Happy Spring!
Okay, okay. I know that many of you are still knee-deep in snow and bundled in your parka! However, here in Utah it has been beautiful! It is almost shorts and sandals weather! WAHOO!

April is almost upon us and with that comes (or has already) that scary word that will cause most teacher to flinch! STATE MANDATED TESTING! Normally I would be one of those teachers. However, with all the changes that we have made at our school this year in order to better serve our students, I am excited for the tests to see if what we have worked on for an entire school year has paid off. So, BRING 'EM!

I also wanted to thank all you amazing people who are members of my blog, Facebook page, and Teachers Pay Teachers and Teacher's Notebook shops. I LOVE hearing from your with your special requests, questions, suggestions, and just friendly hellos! What an amazing circle of friends I have- THANK YOU! And, to those who are landing here for the first time- I hope you will consider joining us for the long-haul. You can NEVER have to many colleagues when it comes to the education realm!

And, speaking of colleagues, I am excited to bring you another amazing teacher-author spotlight. This week I would like you to meet Deana Thelen, the creative genius behind First Grade Chatter. Dana hails us from California and has this to say about herself: "I have been a first grade teacher in Southern California for 18 years! Boy how time flies when you're having fun! I love the teacher interactions on Pinterest, Tpt, and on blogs. I have learned so much! I am determined to never stop learning and to always keep my classroom fresh and current."

When I read her statement, I knew right then and there that Deana is a dedicated teacher. See, as teachers it is easy to just do the same old 'stuff' because it is comfortable and "easy". When Deana said that she likes to keep her room fresh and current, I just get the feeling that she is one who keeps up with best practices.

As I browsed her (currently) 48 resources (9, yes NINE of which are FREE), I found that this lower elementary teacher is all about having resources that fit the common core standards (and most other standards as well). As a sampling, here are several that I think you might enjoy taking a peek at:

Teacher-Author Spotlight Resources Participants
1. Aloha First Grade Hawaiian Luau Activities
2. Common Core Math Facts Mastery-Math Wars
3. First Grade Substitute Folder and Emergency Activities
4. Cinco de Mayo First Grade Fun
5. Earth Day Writing Fun Freebie
6. Patriotic Musical Program for Primary Grades
7. The Tale of Peter Rabbit
8. Wild Things

As you can see, there is a WIDE range of FRESH and CURRENT resources just as she had mentioned. One way to get an idea about a teacher-author is to look at their ratings. Deana currently has a 4.0/4.0 from over 200 votes (or feedback scores).

Just so you can see what others are saying about her, here is some feedback from actual customers of her shop:

Journey into Poetry Land- Form #2- Cinquain (Post #10)

Welcome back to my blog post series: Journey into Poetry Land. This is post #9 in the series. Post #1 is on the All Things Upper Elementary collaborative blog of which I am a contributor. Read it by clicking HERE. The rest are here on my own blog. Just search for "Journey into Poetry Land" on the left side in the search box! And now... on to post #10!

Cinquain-
Funny story! When I originally planned this unit, I had written QUANTRAIN! But, when I made all the copies for my students, I discovered that I had copied CINQUAIN- Not this same thing- AT ALL!

So, I went with what I had copied. I am glad it worked out the way it did- after all everything happens for a reason. This form because one my students favorite.

Because I switched mid-stream to this form, I did NOT have a mentor text available. Hence, I modeled several attempts at this form or them, went over the guided instruction page, and drew out a scaffold template for them. Here are the student examples:

This next one is one of my absolute favorites from this class:

Cheeseburgers
Cooked Meat
Chewing, Swallowing, Smiling
Lettuce stacked onto Cheese
Heaven

While is doesn't maybe follow perfect form, this student caught on to the feeling that should go into poetry. LOVE IT!

Here you can see where the student drew out the template to follow.

This is an interesting example. I thought his made up word "Mathy" was hilarious. Most of the other words I have no idea what was said.

We spent most of the class time just writing lots of examples and sharing. We had a good time laughing and having fun. In fact, this turned out to be one of the favorite forms we studied in this unit. I loved teaching this form, even though it was very unexpected.

WAHOO! More coming soon. Thanks for reading and stop by again soon,

-Mr. Hughes

A"MAZE"ing Plural Nouns!

Greetings Friends!

For the past week I have been studying plural nouns with my 5th grade writing class. They seemed to be doing okay with the many different rules that apply to making nouns plural. But, I wanted a fun, yet engaging way to test their knowledge.

I had been browsing Pinterest when I happened to see a fun idea for a word maze. The one I saw was actually a sight word type "find your way" activity. I knew what I was going to do.

SIX HOURS LATER!

I had a fun set of 4 mazes with which to test my students knowledge. In my mind, I was thinking- total piece of cake! They will zip through these, so I went and added Extended Practice Boxes on the bottom of each maze. Now I was ready.

This morning I made copies of the first two mazes only, because I didn't know what to expect, honestly. I will say they were a big hit- for MOST kids! A few, the ones that hadn't been doing their homework and/or participating in class found that it was frustrating! Even my advanced kids had to really stop and think about if ANY of the touching squares contained words that would fit the rule for the mystery path!

I was also pleased to see that the extended practice box pushed them to really think beyond what we were doing on this maze!

I was pleasantly surprised as well as I wandered around the dialogue that the students were having with each other about why a word did or did not fit the rule (we were working with the "just add -s" rule). Many of the students had a problem and did NOT find the correct path. I guess in the future, I could star a word that IS in the path so that they will know if they are on "the right path'- ha ha.

At the end, I put a blank one under the document camera and we went over it as a class and checked our mazes. I must say, it was fun to go over it together at the end and have a good class discussion on the rule. I can't wait to do the other three mazes with my kiddos. The entire process of working alone, comparing, and then discussing as a class took about 15 minutes. Some students finished early, some weren't finished. But everyone enjoyed the activity. WAHOO!

We are going to work on maze #2 tomorrow for review and then move on in our Idiom unit (that's a toughie to teach as well...phew!). Thanks for stopping by.
Have a great day and happy plural noun teaching to you!

Share the Wealth Teacher-Author Spotlight: Arlene Sandberg

Greetings Dear "Wealthers"!

How wonderful it is to once again welcome you to a great Share the Wealth post. With the speed that March is flying by at, we will zoom past state testing and the kiddos will be waving goodbye as they race out the door for summer fun.

This week I am so pleased to bring you another wonderful teacher author. Let's get started...

I would love to introduce to you the owner of LMN Tree, Arlene Sandberg. Arlene hails from Tallahassee, FL.Here is what Arlene shared with me about herself, "I am a retired teacher with 33 years of teaching experience as an
elementary, special ed and ESL teacher and 4 years as an Education
Consultant developing curriculum and training teachers for an online
e-learning company. I've been married for over 43 years to a great
husband who is a retired military officer and have 2 grown children
and 6 grandchildren.  I started sharing free and paid items this past
January and at the age of 63 started my very first blog. My blog is about  best practices for helping teachers make a difference for their students. I offer lots of great free resources and free activities as
well as great strategies. I had an amazing teaching career and want to
give back to a profession that I love."

WAHOO! 33 years of service. Now that, my friends, is just plain awesome-sauce! And, with THAT level of expertise, you can bet that Arlene has plenty of amazing ideas to share with you. In fact, here are a few that I think are really worth your time.

Additionally, Arlene is currently offering 77 products in her store that cover all subject areas (including 15 FREEBIES- Click HERE to check those puppies out! WAHOO!).

If you are like me, the proof is what do those who actually USE the resources have to say about them. Well, here is a small sampling of what teachers have to say about Arlene's resources.

My Not So Elementary Life  (TpT Seller)

And, in the tradition of our Teacher-Author Spotlight feature, it is time to do a review of one of Arlene's resources so you can get an even better look at her handy work!
